Uganada Fights Back Against ‘Kony 2012′ Using Social Media

The Ugandan government is using Invisible Children‘s own tactics against them.

On last week’s show we played you a brief clip from a ‘response video’ that one of Invisible Children’s co-founders made to address some of the concerns about the original 30 minute ‘documentary‘. (It should be noted this co-founder was NOT the one running mostly naked through the streets of San Diego on Friday…that was the other guy. Apparently he suffered a mental breakdown over the online backlash surrounding the video). But at the same time, the Prime Minister of Uganda is responding (via Youtube) to clarify some details about the fight against Joseph Kony.

Admittedly, it doesn’t have the slick production value that Invisible Children’s video did. But that’s not where the campaign ends. They’re also reaching out over social media to ask several celebrities to visit Uganda and see how the country is today.

All good choices, except maybe for Stephen Colbert. Unless he wants someone to parody the ‘crisis’?

There have been a few campaigns to raise awareness about how things ‘really are’ in Uganda (including #UgandaSpeaks which we touched on last week) and the country doesn’t appear to be taking the misrepresentation lying down. It’s an excellent case study for organizations who are looking to combat a campaign of misinformation (especially if your budget is tight). Unfortunately, they have a while to go before they reach as many people as the original KONY 2012 ‘documentary’ did. But it’s a start.
